Racer Basketball Looks To Build In Prohm's Second Season

With last season's amazing 31-2 season in the rear view mirror, the Murray State men's basketball team and second-year head coach Steve Prohm held media day at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky., just five days before their exhibition game.
While MSU will be looking to returning all-star seniors Isaiah Canaan and Ed Daniel, MSU Head Coach Steve Prohm stressed that he's building a team and everyone has a part to play.
“Preseason accolades for Isaiah and Ed...That's what I talked to those guys about,” Prohm said. “We were picked third last year, we weren't preseason this, we weren't preseason that, we went and earned everything and that's what we have to do. The preseason honors are great, it's an incredible honor for Isaiah to be named preseason All American, but now we have to go out fulfill what the experts say.”
Canaan, from Biloxi, Miss., the OVC Preseason Player of the Year, has also received much national attention in the preseason from several outlets including being named Associated Press Preseason All-America this week. Already ranked 18th on the MSU all-time scoring list, Canaan has 1,374 career points and has a good chance of becoming the sixth MSU player to reach 2,000 points.
Daniel, from Birmingham, Ala., is MSU's leading returning rebounder with 5.5 per game and enters the season ranked ninth on the MSU all-time blocked shot list.
With six players that didn't see playing time last season, including five true freshmen, Prohm knows the Racers will be a work in progress.
“And then we're young,” Prohm said. “We're really young; we've got six freshmen and one newcomer in Dexter Fields. I'm excited about Dexter, I think he can be one of the premier shooters in the conference, and one of the top defenders in the league. Some days are good, some days are bad and that's how it is when you have half your team who are freshmen. They have to continue to grow and continue to get better and which freshmen are going to separate themselves, we haven't seen it yet.”
Prohm's Racers, picked first in the west division in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll, will be trying for their fourth straight regular season title this season. MSU enters the 2012-13 season looking for the program's 24th all-time OVC championship. MSU also leads the OVC with 15 appearances in the NCAA Tournament including two in the last three seasons.
MSU gets their season going Monday when they play an exhibition game at home against Freed-Hardeman (Nov. 5) at 7 p.m. MSU's regular-season opener is at home against Brescia (Nov. 9). MSU hits the road for the Charleston Classic in Charleston, S.C. (Nov. 16-19) where they meet Auburn with a second game against St. John's or College of Charleston. MSU's third game opponent will come from a group of Baylor, Boston College, Colorado and Dayton.
Prohm put the word out today that the Racers need the same kind of fan support that made last season so special.
“I'm excited about our schedule, our schedule is extremely demanding,” Prohm said. “That's the challenge, Rob (MSU Women's Coach Rob Cross) and I talked about it, can we have a seventh consecutive sellout? It was 9,000 people (last season), unbelievable atmosphere, unbelievable energy, I thought the fans last year, and I've been here going on seven years, were a little bit more animated and we had a little bit more energy in the arena last year and I'm looking forward to that his year.”
