Murray State wide receiver/return specialist Walter Powell ended the 2012 season in record-setting fashion, and for his efforts, the junior was a unanimous selection as the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Specialist of the Week. Also, junior linebacker Brandon Wicks was selected as the co-Defensive Player of the Week.
Powell (St. Louis, Mo.) made FCS history by returning a punt 100 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter in a 42-35 victory over Southeast Missouri. It is the longest punt return in NCAA FCS history (since the division was formed in 1978), passing the 98-yard record previously held by Barney Bussey (South Carolina State, 1981) and Willie Ware (Mississippi Valley State, 1985). Powell also returned a first-quarter punt 17 yards.
Powell is not the only Racer to ever go 100 yards on a punt return, as Phil Foster took a punt 100 yards for a touchdown against Morehead State in 1950.
The return success was not limited to punts as Powell took the first kickoff 83 yards to set up the Racers first touchdown. He nearly had another big return as he took the second-half kickoff 36 yards to set up the Racers near midfield.
Powell finished the day by averaging 58.5 yards on two punt returns, and 44.7 yards on three kickoff returns. He added four catches for 51 yards to finish the day with 302 all-purpose yards.
Powell finished the season by averaging 26.3 yards on 23 kickoff returns, and 15.8 yards on 19 punt returns. He also returned two punts for touchdowns, while having a third called back on a penalty. He is one of just three players in the FCS to rank in the top 20 in both kickoff and punt returns.
Wicks (Murray, Ky.) posted a career-high 16 tackles in the victory. He had 12 solo tackles, while adding 1.5 tackles-for-loss and half a sack. He helped secure the seven-point victory by making a big stop in the backfield as the Redhawks attempted to tie the game in the final minutes.
