Racers Take Second At ASU Fall Beach Classic - Newcomb Fourth

The Murray State men's golf team wrapped up the fall portion of the 2012-13 season with a runner-up showing at the ASU Fall Beach Classic at Peninsula Golf and Racket Club in Gulf Shores, Ala.
The Racers finished in a tie with UALR each at 891. MSU was awarded second place on a count back. Vanderbilt was the winner of the 13-team 54-hole event with a final score of 882. MSU's scores for the tournament were 292-296-303=891.
Patrick Newcomb came home with a fourth place finish in the medalist race in a field of 70 players with scores of 71-71-71-76=218, while Hunter York placed ninth with rounds of 72-76-75=223. Preston French placed 11th with rounds of 75-74-75=224, while Tyler Brown earned a 30th place showing with scores of 74-75-80=229. Jordan Smith was 50th with scores of 80-80-77=237.
Stephen F. Austin (897), Southeastern Louisiana (908), Illinois State (910), Troy (914), Rice (918), host Arkansas State (920) and Nicholls State (927) made up the rest of the top-10. Texas Pan-Am (929), New Orleans (931) and UT Martin (941) rounded out the field.
The Racers played five events this fall and finished in the top-4 every time. MSU posted two wins including the Wasioto Winds Fall Classic (Sep. 11) and Skyhawk Classic (Oct. 9). Newcomb, the returning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year had one win this fall at the Skyhawk Classic, two runner up finishes at the MSU Invitational (Oct. 2) and today at this event, and one third place showing at the APSU Intercollegiate (Oct. 23).
“I'm very pleased with the fall that we had,” MSU Head Coach Eddie Hunt said. “We're really looking forward to the spring and we'll be building to April where we'll make the best run we can at the OVC Championship.”
The Racers open the spring season at the Samford Intercollegiate (March 4) in Hoover, Ala., before playing in the Grover Page Classic (March 11) at Jackson, Tenn. MSU plays a pair of events in Florida. They tee it up in Orlando (March 16) at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular and in Boca Raton (March 29) at the Spring Break Invitational. The Racers' final tune-up for the OVC is in Nashville, Tenn. (April 15) at the Big Blue Invitational. GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn., is again the site for the OVC Championship (April 25).
