The Murray State men's golf team placed 14th in their spring opener at the Samford Intercollegiate at Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Ala.
Patrick Newcomb led the Racers with a 28th place finish with scores of 78-74-72=224 in the field of 94 competitors, while Hunter York finished 37th with scores of 73-76-77=226. Preston French placed 56th with rounds of 81-72-78=231 with Tyler Brown placing 82nd with scores of 76-79-84=239. Daniel Harper recorded scores of 84-88-83=255.
MSU had scores of 308-301-310=919 and placed ahead of 15th place UT Martin (924) and 16th place Southern Illinois (926). Bowling Green (926) and Evasnville (936) rounded out the field.
Auburn was the winner of the event at 865, ahead of Vanderbiltwho finished runner up at 876. Georgia Southern (880), Winthrop (887) and host Samford (888) made up the top-5.
The Racers' next event is the Grover Page (March 12-13) at Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn.
