Murray State scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and then turned it over to its pitching staff as Tyler Beers and Will Handlin kept the South Dakota State offense quiet in a 3-2 victory Friday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Jacks (0-1) got on the board in the first as Andrew Phelan singled through the right side and stole second. With two outs, Zach Briggs hit a line drive to center field that got over the head of the center fielder for an RBI double.
The Breds (3-3) responded in the home-half of the inning by sending eight hitters to the plate. Paul Ritzheimer started the one-out rally with an infield single to second base. Dylan Wheeler followed with a double off the fence in right field. Travis Isaak followed with a grounder to third that was misplayed, allowing a runner to score. Jacob Rhodes tucked an RBI double inside the bag at third. Mike Kozlowski drove in the third run with a single into the hole at short.
SDSU got a run back in the seventh on a bloop double from Daniel Telford and a run-scoring double to right center from Daniel Marra.
Beers (1-0) earned his first victory of the season as he allowed two runs on six hits and seven strikeouts over 6.2 innings. Despite allowing a run in the first, Beers struck out the side. He retired the Jacks in order in the fourth and sixth innings, and faced only three hitters in the fifth after he danced around a one-out error by getting the next hitter to hit into a double play.
Will Handlin (1) continued his strong start to the season as he earned the save by allowing two hits over 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Handlin has appeared in four games and has not allowed a run over 8.2 innings.
Stephen Bougher (0-1) was the tough-luck loser after allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and five strikeouts over five innings.
Kozlowski and Colton Speed each led the offense with a pair of hits.
The two teams play the middle game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
