The Murray State Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Ohio Valley Conference have teamed up to sponsor a family in the Hoops for Heroes Project. Adam Horton, 24, of Murray was selected as this year's winner. Horton will be joined in Nashville by his wife, Lorrie Horton, son, Jude Horton, and father-in-law, Brent Gosset.
Now in its second year, Hoops for Heroes was inspired by the Wounded Warriors Project, a non-profit, non-partisan organization whose goal is to help injured service men and women of the U.S. armed forces. The winners are selected by the SAAC organizations at each OVC member institution.
All of the accommodations for the trip were made possible through the MSU SAAC fundraiser, Soup for Soldiers, held Jan. 14 at the CFSB Center.
The Horton family will receive a complimentary stay in Nashville for Friday and Saturday night, along with passes to the semifinal and championship games. They will also receive food gift certificates, gas gift cards and Racer apparel
Horton served in the Navy from July, 2005 to May, 2010 as a member of the Electronic Attack Squadron 138, while being attached to the USS John C. Stennis. He also worked as a Flight Deck Shooter, the staff that launches aircrafts off the ships.
Horton served two deployment tours overseas, each lasting two years and two months. He now serves as the President of the MSU Veterans Student Organization and works in the MSU Veterans Affairs Office.
