The three student-athletes that will be joining the Murray State women's basketball team for the 2012-13 season have all had strong senior seasons at their high schools. Kelsey Dirks (Robinson, Ill./Robinson), Erika Sisk (Oxford, Miss./Oxford) and Christy Soldo (Hopkinsville, Ky./Hopkinsville) were all stand-outs for their respective teams.
"We are thrilled with what we have put together to this point for the 2012 recruiting class,” said Murray State head coach Rob Cross. “All three of these young women are fantastic students and have been exemplary leaders for their respective teams. As evidenced by their accomplishments this season we believe they can step in and contribute immediately.”
Dirks, a 6'3” three-time All-Apollo Conference selection, averaged 16.9 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game for the Lady Maroons. The All-Illinois selection will leave Robinson High School first in blocks, second in rebounding and third in scoring.
“Kelsey Dirks is one of the best post players I have had the privilege of coaching,” said Kelly Brookman, Robinson High School Head Coach. “She possesses multiple offensive and defensive skills. She is a great player with her back to the basket, but also has the range to step out and shoot the 12-15 foot jumper. Kelsey has an exceptional work ethic and a great desire to improve as a player.”
Soldo will join the Racers for the 2012-13 season after spending the last five years on the Hopkinsville High School team. As a senior, the 6'0” guard/forward averaged 18.9 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. The First Region Player of the Year and Kentucky All-Tournament Team selection helped her team claim its first region championship and advance to the Kentucky Sweet 16.
“I had the honor of coaching Christy for five years, and she has grown into a wonderful young lady on and off the floor,” said Tonya Wells, head coach at Hopkinsville High School. “She will be an amazing addition to Murray State and no one will out work her on the court or in the classroom. I'm very proud of her and everything we accomplished at Hopkinsville High School and I can't wait to see her continue her career at Murray State.”
Sisk had an even more productive senior campaign than her previous seasons with the Lady Chargers. The 2011-12 Clarion Ledger Dandy Dozen List selection averaged 22.6 points, 6.0 steals and 5.1 assists per game. Her efforts helped lead Oxford High School to a perfect 33-0 record and a Mississippi State Championship. The Lady Chargers were ranked No. 1 in the state of Mississippi, which with the undefeated season were firsts for the school. The 2012 State Championship MVP has been selection to play in the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star game (March 16) and the adidas Mid-South Senior All-Star game (April 14).
“Erika has been a huge part of our success demonstrated by her talent, character and leadership skills,” said Shayne Linzy, Oxford High School Head Coach. “She has a promising future and I have no doubt in my mind that she will impact those around her as a player and as an individual.”
“Erika, Kelsey and Christy will bring speed, size, athleticism and shot making ability to the 2012-2013 edition of the Racers,” added Cross. “Our staff cannot wait to get to work helping them achieve all of their goals both on and off of the court. The thing that Racer fans are going to like the most about them is the fact that all three of them play extremely hard and they will lay it all on the line for their team and Murray State University."
