Murray State softball struggled to generate runs Wednesday afternoon, losing a pair of 1-0 games against the University of Memphis at the Tiger Softball Complex in Memphis, Tenn.
Both teams had problems creating offense in the opener, with Memphis running itself out of a scoring chance in the bottom of the first. With runners on first and third and one out, the Racers caught third base runner Morgan Mosby in a rundown, tagging her out on the play for the inning's second out. Starting pitcher Shelby Kosmecki would escape the jam unharmed, getting a groundout to second to end the threat.
Neither team would advance a runner on base over the next two and a half innings until Ellen Roberts singled down the left field line. Ijiah Hargrove pinch ran for Roberts and was quickly removed from the bases as Ellyn Troup threw her out at second on a steal attempt.
Troup would become the only Racer to reach base in the game, drawing a five pitch walk in the MSU half of the fifth inning.
Memphis would score the lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth as Roberts doubled to left with a runner on first. The run would come in to score as the throw from the outfield to third hopped into the MSU dugout, advancing both runners a base.
Kosmecki lowered her OVC league-leading ERA to 1.74 on the season, allowing just one unearned run in six innings. She allowed six hits on the afternoon, walking none and striking out two.
Roberts allowed just one walk on the day in picking up the no hitter for Memphis, striking out eight Racers and facing one more than the minimum.
The Racers had an easier time putting runners on base in the nightcap but still struggled in bringing them home, stranding three runners after doubles with zero or one outs as they also dropped game two 1-0.
Megan Glosser plunked a double that landed inside the left field line and rolled into foul territory with one out in the first, and Christian Cox and Sarah Anderson each doubled to left field to lead off the Murray State halves of the third and fifth innings, respectively.
The Tigers scored the one run of the game in the bottom of the first as Mosby reached on a throwing error, and later advanced a pair of bases on two illegal pitches to cross home plate.
Chelsey Sullivan was saddled with the loss in the circle for MSU, allowing three hits and four walks in six innings with a solo unearned run. She struck out four on the day.
Jordan Richwood earned the win for Memphis, striking out 11 in seven innings. She gave up four hits and one walk in the seven inning performance.
The Racers return to action this weekend, traveling to Eastern Illinois for a three game set. Saturday's doubleheader in Charleston, Ill., is set for 1 p.m., with Sunday's solo game scheduled for noon.
