Members of various athletic teams from Murray State University will be having breakfast with Murray Elementary and Murray Middle School students the week of March 5 – 9. The Racers attendance at the morning breakfasts at each school is in support of School Breakfast Week and is intended to help students understand the importance of eating healthy and being active.
Mallory Cathey, School Nutrition Director of the Murray Independent School system, came up with the idea and sought the support of Racer Athletics.
"Since the theme this year is "Go For the Gold", I thought it would be fun to have MSU athletes to visit and eat breakfast with the students," explained Cathey when asked about the program.
“Our athletic teams take great pride in working with the community and in the Western Kentucky region, especially when it comes to promoting healthy living, physical activity and the benefits of a good education” said Associate Athletic Director Paul Bubb. “This is just one more way we can give back to the community for all of the great support they show us throughout the year.”
Monday morning kicked off with some of the MSU basketball players visiting Murray Elementary School. Students brought basketballs as well as various other items to be signed by the winning Racer team. Usually about 140 students eat breakfast at school but approximately 250 students ate with the basketball players.
Student-athletes from rifle, women's basketball, volleyball, golf, track and soccer, as well as men's basketball and football will be appearing at the schools all week.
