Racers Amp Up Intensity Thursday Afternoon

After two sub par practices earlier this week, the Murray State football team returned to the fast-paced ways of Racer football as plays were made on both sides of the ball during Thursday's practice at Stewart Stadium.
“We had two poor practices in a row and we had a little talk before practice today that we need to focus on the little things and be excited about the opportunity we have,” said head coach Chris Hatcher. “Today was a much better day, with more intensity. I thought offensively, during our blitz pick-up period, was the best we looked all spring. Defensively, in the scrimmage, we had guys flying around and making some big hits.”
The offense wasted little time in the blitz-pick-up period as Casey Brockman hit Ja-Vonta Trotter over the middle and he did the rest to the tune of a 40-yard touchdown. After an incompletion and a sack by Corey Addison, Brockman converted a third-and-long by hooking up with Dontel Watkins.
The second unit enjoyed some success as well as Spencer Phillips broke free for a 30-yard run, before picking up 28 yards on back-to-back completions to Nikkous Moore and John King.
On the opening possession of the scrimmage, the duo of Brockman and Watkins hooked up three times, including a 39-yard catch and run to set up the offense in the red zone. The defense stiffened from that point as Qua Huzzie stopped Duane Brady for no gain, and Kevin Robinson ended the drive with a sack.
A big play got the second-team offense going as Phillips found Asa Powell for 47 yards, but that would be it as a false start helped stall the drive. Robinson helped stop the third drive before it got started as recorded his second sack to force a third-and-long.
The practice ended with the offense getting eight plays from midfield. The only catch was that neither side of the ball was allowed to make any substitutions.
The defense held the offense to no yards on the first two plays, but Brockman found Hannibal Beauford for 32 yards to put the offense in business. A pair of sacks from Tyler Evans and Robinson, coupled around a big hit from Darius Buck, left the offense on the 21-yard line with one play to go. Brockman avoided pressure and found Watkins near the goaline, but Buck stepped up and made the hit to bring down the receiver at the one-yard line.
The Racers return to the field tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
