Racers Comeback Falls Short in 10-9, Extra Inning Loss

Murray State softball erased a 6-1 deficit against Morehead State Sunday afternoon, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 8-8, but the Racers were unable to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard in extra innings of a 10-9 defeat at Racer Field.
Trailing 8-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Leslie Bridges singled into left field to score Megan Glosser from second with one out. Following a Casey Castile walk, Alexa Becker singled into left to score pinch runner Mallory Richardson from second to trail by two. Mandi Kellerman reached on a fielder's choice as the Eagles took the force out at third for the second out of the inning. Meghan Sims was able to reach on a ball that hit off of pitcher Brittany Chapman's glove and rolled towards first base to load the bases, and Ellyn Troup took advantage of the error to drive in two on a single through the left side of the infield to tie the game .
Morehead State (12-27, 5-15 OVC) responded in the top of the eighth, starting with a two-out Katie Raile walk. She would score all the way from first on a single to the right field wall by Jamie Massaro to take a 9-8 lead. The Eagles added another run later in the inning on an infield single by Adrena Anderson to head into the bottom half of the inning up two.
Glosser led off the Racers (19-15, 12-9 OVC) eighth inning with a single to Chapman and moved into scoring position on a steal of second. Advancing to third as Mo Ramsey grounded out to short, she scored on an illegal pitch to close the gap to one. Leslie Bridges followed with a single up the middle to put the tying run on base, but Murray State was unable to take advantage, following with a pair of groundouts to end the game.
Becker and Castile each homered in the game for the Racers; Becker hitting a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the second inning and Castile hitting a two-run blast in the Murray State sixth.
Becker led the Racers with four hits in five at-bats, driving in three runs and scoring twice.
Anderson tallied five hits on the day for Morehead State, as they out-hit the Racers 20 to 10 for the game.
Chapman received the win for Morehead State, tossing the final 1.2 innings for the Eagles. She gave up three hits and allowed one run in earning her first win of the season.
Chelsey Sullivan took the loss in relief for Murray State, giving up four runs on nine hits and three walks in four innings out of the bullpen.
The Racers return to action Thursday afternoon, hosting Campbellsville in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Racer Field.
