Murray State softball responded from a heartbreaking loss the day prior, scoring 21 runs on the day as the Racers defeated Austin Peay 15-4 and 6-1 Sunday afternoon at Racer Field in Murray, Ky.
Megan Glosser kick started the MSU offense in the first on her first triple of the season into the gap in left center. Mo Ramsey followed with a slow single to the Austin Peay pitcher that kept Glosser on third and placed runners on the corners. Ramsey would steal second without a throw, and Alexa Becker put both runners in motion with a single between the short stop and third baseman to score Glosser. Becker would steal second in the same fashion, and a Casey Castile line drive up the middle into center field with two outs would score Ramsey to give the Racers a 2-0 lead. Sarah Anderson would break the game open, hitting her first home run as a Racer over the wall in left center to put MSU up 5-0.
The Lady Govs grabbed four runs back in the top of the second, as Catie Cozart singled up the middle with runners on the corners to score one. Lauren deCastro would score three more on a line drive home run to score three as Austin Peay would leave its half of the inning trailing 5-4.
Ramsey helped the Racers build a larger lead in the third, singling in to right field to score Christian Cox from second with two outs. Becker kept the inning going on an infield single to score Ellyn Troup from third. An errant throw by the APSU short stop to first would allow Ramsey to score from second as the Racers would leave the third inning leading 8-4.
Mandi Kellerman added on in the fourth, leading off the inning with her third home run of the season off of the scoreboard in left center to put MSU up 9-4. Becker would lead to three more runs scoring on a single to the short stop. Becker would advance to third on the play as the bases cleared on an error on the throw to first. She would come in to score on a wild pitch to put the Racers up 13-4. Later in the inning, Casey Castile blasted her sixth home run of the season to right field to put MSU up 15-4.
CheyAnne Gaskey picked up her fourth win of the season, tossing 3.1 shutout innings in relief. She gave up a hit and a walk while recording a strikeout.
Morgan Brewer suffered the loss, giving up five runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning pitched.
Ramsey, Becker and Anderson each tallied three hits on the game for the Racers, with Becker driving in four runs while Ramsey scored three times and Anderson recorded three RBI. Castile also had a productive game at the plate, going 2-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Becker kept the home runs coming in the bottom of the first in game two, hitting the team's fourth blast of the day after Glosser and Ramsey led off the game with infield singles to take a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning.
Kellerman came through with her second round-tripper of the day, hitting a ball similar to her first home run to lead off the bottom of the third and put the Racers up 4-0.
The Lady Govs took a run back in the top of the fourth on a Jessica Ryan single to the short stop, driving in Cozart from second. She came in to score as the throw went to first and beat the throw attempt at the plate.
Murray State added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, scoring one on a Becker fielder's choice to the short stop as the throw home attempting to get Glosser out at the plate was late. Castile later singled through the right side, scoring Ramsey to take a 6-1 lead.
Chelsey Sullivan improved to 9-5 on the season, giving up a single run in the complete game outing. She allowed seven hits and a walk while striking out four.
Brewer took the loss for the second straight game for Austin Peay, giving up six runs in three-plus innings on nine hits and a walk. She struck out four.
Glosser and Ramsey each had three hits and a pair of runs in the top two spots in the MSU batting order. Becker paced the Racers with four RBIs.
deCastro led the Lady Govs with three hits in the game.
The Racers return to action at home Tuesday afternoon against Bethel. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
