BOX SCORE
Murray State managed to get the leadoff hitter on in six of the first seven innings, but managed to score just one run and strand 16 runners in falling, 7-1, to Southeast Missouri Friday evening at Capaha Field.
The Redhawks (18-32, 9-13 OVC) used a leadoff fielding error in the second inning to push across three runs on only one hit. A pair of walks followed to loaded the bases and Ryan Barnes drove in two runs with a double off the top of the wall in center field, and Jesse Tierney delivered a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Breds (21-29, 7-15 OVC) looked to get on the board in the third, but a call from third base umpire Manny Gonzalez nullified the run. With runners on second and third, Paul Ritzheimer hit a chopper to third that looked to hit off the glove of the third baseman and get passed him. After the ball went off his glove, it hit the runner going to third. The umpire ruled that the ball did not touch the fielder and thus the runner was out and the runner had to go back to third.
SEMO added another run in the bottom of the third after Trenton Moses doubled off the top of the wall in center field and scored on a two-out double to left center by Kody Campbell.
MSU got on the board in the fifth inning as Ty Stetson drew a leadoff walk and scored on Mike Kozlowski's double into the right-field corner.
SEMO added a run in the seventh as Kenton Parmley drew a two-out walk and stole second. Jason Blum followed wtih an RBI double down the left-field line.
The Redhawks added two runs in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Tierney and a fielding error with two outs scored the second run.
Tyler Beers (3-6) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits and two strikeouts over five innings. Shae Simmons (5-4) earned the victory after allowing one run on eight hits, six strikeouts and five walks over six innings. Christian Hull (3) earned the save after allowing no hits and walking three over the final three innings.
Stetson came to plate five times, but did not have an official plate appearance. The leadoff hitter walked three times, put down a sacrifice bunt and was hit by pitch. He raised his OVC-leading walk total to 49, ranking third on the MSU single-season list.
The Breds and Redhawks play the middle game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
