Murray State scored five runs with two outs in the fifth inning to break open a tie game and defeat Southeast Missouri 7-2 Saturday afternoon at Capaha Field. The victory marked the first time in eight OVC weekends the Breds won the middle game of the series.
The Breds (22-29, 8-15 OVC) pushed across two runs in the third inning without the luxury of a base hit. Corey Bays started things by reaching on a walk before Ty Stetson put down a bunt that did not get Bays at second. After Paul Ritzheimer was hit by an 0-2 pitch, Jacob Rhodes drove in a run with a groundout to first and Mike Kozlowski delivered a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Redhawks (18-33, 9-14 OVC) tied the game in the fourth as a pair of singles put two runners on with two outs. Taylor Heon delivered a bloop hit into right field that took a bad hop over the head of the right fielder for a two-run triple.
MSU had an answer with two outs in the fifth inning to push across five runs. Stetson doubled to left center with one out, and was followed by Ritzheimer being hit by an 0-2 pitch for the second-straight at-bat and Rhodes walked. After the second out was recorded, Brandon Eggenschwiler delivered a two-run double off the base of the right-field wall and Noah Zipko launched a three-run home run off the scoreboard in left field.
Bryan Babin (5-4) earned the victory after allowing just two runs on six hits over six innings. Will Handlin (4) picked up the save after allowing just one hit in three shutout innings. Zack Smith (2-6) took the loss after allowing six runs on four hits, two walks and two hit batters over 4.2 innings.
Eggenschwiler led the offense by going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, while Zipko drove in three runs. Stetson reached base twice and scored a pair of runs.
The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
