Murray State nearly erased a seven-run deficit in the second inning as they pulled within one run, but were never able to take the lead in falling 9-8 to Southeast Missouri in the rubber game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Capaha Field.
The Breds (22-30, 8-16 OVC) got on the board in the first inning without the luxury of a base hit. Ty Stetson started the game by walking for the 50th time this season, and Paul Ritzheimer was hit by a pitch. Jacob Rhodes advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, before a wild pitch with two outs scored Stetson from third.
The Redhawks (19-33, 10-14 OVC) took the lead in the third as a one-out walk and single up the middle came in to score on a Jesse Tierney three-run home run to right field. The was just the beginning as back-to-back walks set up a hit parade that consisted of an RBI single from Jason Blum, a two-run double from Trenton Moses, RBI double from Andy Lennington and a run-scoring single up the middle from Kody Campbell.
MSU chipped away at the lead in the third as Stetson was hit by a pitch with one out. Rhodes started a two-out rally with a single up the middle, and was followed with an RBI single through the left side from Mike Kozlowski and a run-scoring single up the middle from Brandon Eggenschwiler.
The Breds inched closer in the fourth as they scored two more runs without getting a hit. Dylan Wheeler and Rick Linton walked to star the inning, before Corey Bays put down a sacrifice bunt. Stetson delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, before the second run scored on a wild pitch.
The comeback continued in the fifth with Eggenschwiler singling up the middle and advancing to second on a wild pitch. Wheeler, who made two unbelievable plays with the glove, scored Eggenschwiler with a single to center field.
SEMO got one run back in the bottom of the fifth as Kenton Parmley hit a solo home run to left field.
The MSU offense was back at it in the sixth with Stetson being hit by a pitch and going to third on a Paul Ritzheimer double just inside the bag at third. Rhodes walked to load the bases before Eggenschwiler drove in two runs with a single through the left side. Noah Zipko nearly gave the Breds the lead, but Lennington made a diving catch in the gap in right center to end the inning.
Kyle Cornett (3-4) took the loss after allowing four runs on two hits and four walks over 1.1 innings. Ryan Prickett (2-1) picked up the victory in relief after allowing one hit and striking out four over three shutout innings. Christian Hull struck out the only hitter he faced to earn his fourth save.
Eggenschwiler led the offense by going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Wheeler added a pair of hits, while Stetson scored three runs.
The Breds return to action Tuesday evening as they play host to #7 Kentucky at Brooks Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
