Brockman Named Preseason OVC Offensive Player of the Year; Racers Picked Third

Murray State All-American quarterback Casey Brockman was named the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, it was announced at the league's annual Media Day Monday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn. Linebackers Qua Huzzie and Sam Small were named to the preseason team.
As a team, the Racers were picked to finish third, behind preseason favorite Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State. EKU picked up 12 first-place votes and 124 total points, while JSU had six first-place votes and 117 points. The Racers picked up 85 points, and were followed by Tennessee Tech (83), Tennessee State (69), UT Martin (67), Southeast Missouri (44), Eastern Illinois (42), and Austin Peay (17).
Brockman (Murray, Ky.) was selected as the preseason player of the year for the second-straight season. The Walter Payton Award candidate became the first Racer quarterback to earn All-America honors after going 316-for-477 for 3,276 yards and 25 touchdowns a season ago.
He ranked among the national leaders in all major categories, ranking fourth in completions per game (28.73), fifth in completions and total offense (315.45), seventh in yards per game (297.8), and tied for eighth in touchdown passes.
Huzzie (LaGrange, Ga.) earned second-team all-OVC honors last season after leading the conference with 14 tackles-for-loss. He finished the season with 80 tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and four pass break-ups. Against EKU, Huzzie finished with 13 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, two sacks and a pair of forced fumbles. He recovered a fumble against Austin Peay and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown.
Small (Winona, Miss.) earned second-team all-OVC honors last season after posting a team-best 115 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He reached double digits in tackles in eight of the 11 games, including a season-high 16 stops against Jacksonville State. He ended the season with 13 tackles against APSU and Southeast Missouri.
The Racers report to camp on July 31 in preparation for their Sept. 1 opener at Florida State. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. and can be seen live on ESPN3.
