Cross Country Opens at Memphis Twilight Classic

The 2012 Murray State cross country season kicks off on Saturday evening in Memphis, Tenn., with the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic hosted by Christian Brothers University.
The women will begin with their 5k run beginning at approximately 8:40 p.m. The men will follow with their four mile race beginning at around 9:20. Mississippi is the defending women's champion of the race, while Western Kentucky holds the men's title.
The Racers are led by third year head coach Jenny Severns. MSU returns three athletes off of last season's men's team in Jordan Althoff, Zack Calvert and Chase Darnell. Six new runners will join the Racer men's team in 2012.
The Murray State women return eight athletes from the 2011 squad and have nine new runners joining the team this year. Rebecca Hbetamu and Bridget Stichnot are the Racers' two seniors this season. Brittany Bohn, Sara Davis, Anna Grimes, Anne Jablinski, Abbie Oliver and Carolyne Tanui also return for MSU.
The Racers will compete in five races this season before the Ohio Valley Conference Championships on Oct. 27 at Jacksonville State. The NCAA Southeast Regional is Nov. 9 in Charlotte, N.C. The MSU women were picked to finish fifth in the OVC this season, while the men were picked 11th.
