Murray State picked up a pair of adidas Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors as Jaamal Berry earned newcomer honors, while Brandon Wicks was named the top defender. The duo helped the Racers earn their first victory of the season, a hard-fought 28-23 victory over Missouri State.
Berry (Miami, Fla.) made his Racer debut Saturday evening and caught the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. He finished the game with eight carries for 41 yards, and four catches for 44 yards and a touchdown. Facing a 3rd-and-9, Berry caught a short pass in the flat and used his speed to get to the sideline and dive for the pylon and the score. Of his 12 touches, five went for a first down, including three key third-down conversions.
Wicks (Murray, Ky.) made the biggest play of the game as he intercepted a pass near midfield with just over a minute remaining to seal the victory. He posted a team-best 10 tackles, five solo, on the night, including a tackle-for-loss. The three-year starter continued to make big plays all over the field. After a big run put the Bears deep into Racer territory, Wicks came up on the next play and delivered a big hit on the running back in the backfield. He helped the Racers get the ball back on downs with coverage deep over the middle on third and fourth down.
The Racers return to action Saturday night as they open OVC action at Eastern Illinois on Sept. 22. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and can be seen live on the Racer TV Network.
