The Murray State softball team closed out its 2013 fall season Thursday by taking both games of a doubleheader, 7-2 and 5-2, with Lake Land College at Racer Field in Murray. The sweep gives the Racers their seven and eighth wins of the fall, wrapping-up their non-traditional season with an unblemished record.
In game one, the Racers came out on fire and scored six runs in the opening frame. Mo Ramsey got the inning started with a bunt single, then eventually scored by stealing home. Later in the stanza, Jessica Twaddle pushed the lead out 3-0 with home run to left center, her first of the fall.
The Racers tacked on one more run in the seventh on a double by Leslie Bridges. The two-bagger scored Alexa Becker, who reached earlier in the inning on a double of her own.
Becker, Shelbey Miller & Jocelynn Rodgers led MSU in the contest by each going 2-for-4. All three crossed the plate once, while Miller also drove in a run.
CheyAnne Gaskey picked up her fourth win of the fall by allowing no runs on just one hit over five innings with three strikeouts and only one walk. Gaskey finished the fall with just about as good of campaign as you can have by posting a 4-0 record, a 0.00 ERA, a .102 opponent's batting average and a team-high 18 strikeouts.
In the second game, the Lakers put up more of a fight and even led 2-1 after the top of the fifth. However, in the bottom of the frame the Racers responded in a big way. Casey Castile got the rally started with a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Becker to score. After Mallory Richardson scored on a Lake Land error, Morgan Harrell capped the four-run frame with a two-RBI double to left center to seal the 5-3 win.
With the game tied at one, J.J. Francis entered the fray in the fifth inning and piloted the Racers to the win. Francis went three innings in the contest, allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts to finish the fall at 3-0
Over the eight game fall season, Miller turned in a team-high batting average of .519 to go along with a .778 slugging percentage and a .552 on-base percentage, also a team high. Becker led MSU in the fall in slugging percentage at .800, by blasting six doubles, a triple and a home run on 13 hits.
Becker's batting average and on-base percentage were equally as impressive, as she finished those two categories at .430 and .469, respectively. Bridges also had a great fall by posting a .450 average, a .750 slugging percentage and a .476 on-base percentage.
The 2014 edition of the MSU softball team will make its debut on Feb. 7-9 at the Tiger Classic hosted by LSU. While in Baton Rouge, the Racers will take on Central Arkansas, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Southern Illinois and the host Tigers.
