Three Murray State players took home weekly honors from the Ohio Valley Conference after the team's 35-24 victory over Tennessee Tech. Cornerback Josh Manning was named the Defensive Player of the Week, while Walter Powell earned Specialist of the Week honors and Maikhail Miller earned Newcomer of the Week accolades.
Manning had his hand in two of the three Racer takeaways on Saturday. On the opening possession of the second half, Manning scooped up a fumble and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown. Later in the third quarter, he stepped in front of a Jared Davis pass for his second interception of the season. He also recorded an interception last week against Jacksonville State. Both of his interceptions this season have come on the first play of a drive.
Powell earned specialist honors for the second time this season. He sparked the Racers to victory after returning a first-quarter punt 88 yards for a touchdown. It marked the second-straight season he returned a punt for a touchdown in the first quarter against Tennessee Tech. Powell finished the game with 310 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. As a receiver, Powell had eight catches for 177 yards and a pair of scores. He hauled in touchdown grabs of 55 and 59 yards.
Miller earned his second-straight newcomer honor, and third overall. Miller recorded his first career 300-yard passing game after going 31-for-42 for 306 yards and two touchdowns against TTU. He also rushed for 44 yards on 12 carries. Miller threw touchdown passes of 55 and 59 yards, both to Powell.
