The Murray State women's soccer team picked up a big win Sunday, by blanking Tennessee Tech, 3-0, at Tech Soccer Field in Cookeville.
After a tough loss Friday, the Racers (4-6-1, 1-3 OVC) came out firing on all cylinders against the Golden Eagles by scoring early and often in the fourth and sixth minutes. Rebecca Bjorkvall struck first for MSU, less than five minutes into the match on a pass from Julie Mooney. Just over a minute later, Mooney scored a goal of her own on a play that was set-up by Lauren Frazier and Tasha Merritt.
Later in the half, Merritt found her way onto the score sheet for the second time this season on a header from Kenzie Downey in the 31st minute. Despite outshooting the Racers, 15-14, Tennessee Tech (3-10, 1-3 OVC), could not find the back of the net, as MSU held on for the 3-0 win.
Savannah Haberman and Kylie Lawrence combined for the shutout in the contest between the posts for MSU. Haberman spent nearly 81 minutes in goal and came up with five saves, while Lawrence closed out the match and did not face a shot.
After the game head coach Beth Acreman talked about the win.
"It was a really frustrating result for us Friday, so we were ready to come out and go for the win today," said Acreman. "We wanted to come out with intensity and focus and get goals early and we did that by scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes. It was also great to get a shutout which has been one of our goals all season and it was good for our back line and goalkeepers to accomplish that."
The Racers return to Cutchin Field next weekend when they continue their quest for an OVC tournament berth. Friday, Murray State will take on SIU Edwardsville at 3 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. showdown with Eastern Illinois Sunday.
