Â
The 25th Annual Racer Classic Golf Tournament, for the benefit of Racer Athletics, was held (Oct. 4) at the home of Murray State Golf, Miller Memorial Golf Course, in Murray, Ky.
Â
Though weather leading up to the event was questionable, the teams enjoyed a clear day and had a great time of fellowship.
Â
The team of Scott Foster, Rick Bray, Mark Whitaker and Jimmy Dan Hicks took honors with a 15-under 56. Second-place went to the team of Heath Scott, Ford Branch, Matt Garrison and John Key with a 14-under 57. In third-place with an 11-under 60, was the team of J. L. Barnett, Alan Lanier, Keith Miller and Charles Miles.
Â
Individual contest winners included Bill Whitaker (Longest Drive and Most Accurate Drive); Zach Dunlap (Longest Putt); and Mark Whitaker (Closest to the Pin). Bill Whitaker also took honors in the putting contest.
Â
Players had the opportunity to meet with members of the Racer coaching staff during the pre-tournament BBQ. The tournament, one of the longest running golf tournaments in the Murray, not only raises funds but also awareness about the Racers' 16-sport NCAA Division I athletic program.
Â
The Racer Classic, normally held the first Friday in June, was postponed to October in order to accommodate the new greens that were installed at Miller Memorial. The Racer Classic will again be a summer event when the 26th annual tournament is played June 6, 2014.
Â
The tournament was just one of multiple events taking place at Murray State this past weekend as softball hosted Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday, winning 7-0 and 7-3; while football hosted and defeated Tennessee Tech on Saturday 35-24; and volleyball lost to Morehead State (3-0).
