The Murray State women's soccer team ended their 2013 season on a positive note by taking down Austin Peay, 2-1, Sunday at Cutchin Field.
Before the game, the two Murray State soccer seniors were honored for Senior Day. Shauna Wicker and Tasha Merritt both received recognition for their commitment to the Racer program.
Murray Statewasted no time getting on the board when Julie Mooney found a wide open Bronagh Kerins in the fourth minute. Kerins then buried one in the upper left corner, for her second goal in as many games.
The Racers pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute when Lauren Frazier added the insurance goal on assists from Merritt and Taylor Stevens. With the goal, Frazier ends her freshman campaign with five, the second most on the team.
For Austin Peay (10-5-2, 5-4-1 OVC), the game held seeding consequences for the upcoming OVC tournament. Finding themselves down 2-0 in the second half, the Lady Govs shot at anything that moved in the frame, ending with 24 total shots and 17 on goal.
Despite the barrage, freshman Savannah Haberman was up to the task and ended the match with a new program and OVC single-game record 23 saves, including 16 in the second half. She ends her first year in the blue and gold with a 111 saves, becoming the first Racer goalkeeper in program history to record more than 100 saves in a single season.
Eventually, the Lady Govs broke through in the 84th minute on a goal by Emily Kink to cut the score to 2-1. However, that would be a close as Austin Peay would get, as Murray State held on for the win.
The Racers end their 2013 season at 6-10-1 overall and 3-7 in the league. Despite missing the six-team field for the OVC tournament, MSU will end the year on a two-game win streak.
