Racer Quarterbacks Coming Along In Spring Workouts

The Murray State Football team enjoyed a warm day as they continued spring drills at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray, Ky.
Offensive Coordinator Mitch Stewart spoke to GoRacers.com after the Wednesday practice and offered up an update at the all-important position of quarterback. With the graduation of All-America pick Casey Brockman, the Racers are having a good competition this spring to see who replaces him as the starter.
Stewart has help from Brockman for a while, as the former Racer QB waits on possible professional chances.
As spring workouts have progressed, Stewart said the quarterback position now has three possibilities after Spencer Phillips was moved to running back.
“Right now we have a three-man rotation with KD Humphries, Parks Frazier and newcomer CJ Bennett,” Stewart said. “And we're having some growing pains and we're kind of sporadic right now. But that's expected when you have three new guys and even KD, who was the back-up last season, in my mind I consider him new.”
Stewart said the competition at quarterback has been good as the Racers' head toward the annual spring game on April 20.
The Racers were in full pads today which cause a different feel than when the team dons helmets only on some days and other days helmets and shoulder pads.
“Playing in full pads amps the kids up a little bit,” Stewart said. “It's much more physical especially on the perimeter with the receivers and defensive backs. I like it because it's different when you have pads on. It's different catching the ball and it's different throwing the ball. The bigs have a little more gear to carry on them all day and you get into a toughness thing on days with full pads in the guys have to fight through and finish strong.”
The Racers return to the practice field for a session on Friday starting at 4:30 p.m.
