Defensive Using Spring to Learn New Scheme

Murray State will enter the 2013 season with an entirely new scheme on the defensive side of the ball. Thus, the Racers are taking full advantage of the 15 practices in the spring to learn the new alignment calls.
The foundation for the Racer defense lies in its linebacking corps. If it is one position where the Racers have depth, it is at linebacker. Senior Sam Small returns to his middle linebacker spot after missing the 2012 season with an injury. Small led the Racers with 115 tackles in 2011.
Senior Qua Huzzie returns for his third season with the Racers. Huzzie has led the team in tackles-for-loss in each of his first two seasons. Fellow senior Anthony Hayes made the switch from wide receiver midway through last season and has adjusted well to the new position.
Sophomore T-Ray Malone was one of the biggest surprises last season as he recorded 51 tackles as a true freshman. Sophomore Chris Dansby returns after missing the 2012 season. Dansby posted 15 tackles in seven games as a true freshman in 2011.
The group was bolstered at semester with the additions of junior college transfers Chavez Sims and Travis Taylor. The two bring experience to the position and the ability to make plays.
The Racers will conduct two more practices this week. The Racers will take the field at 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, and then close out the spring with the annual Blue-Gold Bowl Saturday at noon. The game will be proceeded on the field by the Junior Racers Combine.
