Big Inning Dooms Breds in Series Opener

Belmont scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to hand Murray State a 7-2 defeat in the first game of a three-game series Friday afternoon at Rose Park in Nashville, Tenn.
The Breds (20-29, 8-17 OVC) got on the board in the first inning as Ty Stetson singled to right center and went to second on a Brandon Elliott sacrifice bunt. Brandon Eggenschwiler drove in Stetson with a single through the right side.
MSU starter Brock Downey was in control through four innings of his second start of the season. Downey retired the first 11 hitters he faced, before giving up a double with two outs in the fourth.
The Bruins (34-15, 19-6 OVC) got to Downey with two outs in the fifth as Jamie Ritchie delivered a two-run single to left field. After the third walk of the inning, Jared Breen delivered a three-run home run to right center.
BU tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and seventh on a Matt Beaty double to right field, and Breen's second home run, a solo shot to left center.
MSU got one run back in the eighth as Paul Ritzheimer singled into the hole at short and went to second when Stetson walked for the second time in the game. With two outs, Eggenschwiler went the other way and doubled just inside the bag at third for his second RBI of the day.
Downey (0-5) suffered the loss after he gave up the five runs on just three hits, three walks and four strikeouts over a career-long five innings.
BU starter Chase Brookshire (4-1) settled in after he gave up the run in the first inning as he allowed just one base runner over the next four innings. He finished the day allowing two hits, and walking one, while striking out nine over five innings.
Eggenschwiler led the offense by going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
The two teams play the middle game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
