Murray State sophomore left hander Brock Downey tossed his first career complete game, but it was not enough as Eastern Kentucky handed the Breds a 3-1 defeat in the first game of a three-game series Thursday afternoon at Reagan Field.
Downey (0-6) was making his third career start and never threw more than five innings. But, on this day, he allowed just seven hits and struck out five over nine innings. None of the three runs he allowed came on a base hit from the Colonels.
The performance of Downey was slightly overshadowed by EKU right hander Brent Cobb (6-6) who tossed six innings of no-hit baseball, striking out six. He gave way to Shane Grimm in the seventh. Grimm allowed the only run of the day without allowing a hit. Cody Creamer (3) picked up the save after allowing the only two hits of the game for the Breds.
EKU (19-31, 15-12 OVC) got on the board in the second inning as they loaded the bases with a pair of one-out singles and a walk. Luke Wurzelbacher drove in the run on a fielder's choice groundout to first.
Two innings later, the Colonels loaded the bases with no outs. Downey kept his composure and enticed a 6-4-3 double play that scored a run, and then struck out the next batter to get out of the inning.
The Colonels lead grew in the eighth as they stole a run with two outs. With runners on the corners and two outs, Downey threw over to first to get the runner breaking for second. Unfortunately, the runner stayed in a run down long enough to allow the runner from third to score.
The Breds (20-32, 8-20 OVC) finally got something going in the bottom of the eighth as Brandon Eggenschwiler started a rally with a four-pitch walk with one out. After a pitching change, Mike Kozlowski greeted the new pitcher with a single through the right side, the first of the game, to put runners on the corners. Dylan Wheeler followed with an RBI single to right center. Creamer stopped the rally there as he got an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
The two teams will play the middle game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for 3 p.m., but was moved up two hours due to the threat of rain.
