Powell Named to Walter Payton Award Watch List

Murray State senior wide receiver Walter Powell was one of 20 players named to Walter Payton Award Watch List release by The Sports Network on Monday.
Powell is the second MSU player to be nominated for this award over the past three seasons. Former quarterback Casey Brockman finished 6th in the voting in 2012, after placing 11th in 2011.
Powell has received plenty of preseason recognition this summer. He was selected as a Preseason First-Team All-America as an all-purpose back by TSN and Lindy's. He was also selected as a Preseason All-American by the Sporting News (return specialist), Football Gameplan (wide receiver) and Beyond College Sports (punt returner and wide receiver), as well as the College Football Performance Awards Wide Receivers Watch List.
Powell (St. Louis, Mo.) finished the season by ranking second in the FCS in all-purpose yards, averaging 193.0 per game. As a punt returner, Powell averaged 15.8 yards per return, including touchdown returns of 70 and 100 yards. He also averaged 26.3 yards on 23 kickoff returns.
As a receiver, Powell set new school records for receptions and yards as he hauled in 94 catches for 1,213 yards and 10 touchdowns. He set a school record with six 100-yard receiving performances, and caught at least one touchdown in six of the final seven games. Â
Powell had at least 200 all-purpose yards in six games, including amassing 302 all-purpose yards in the season finale against Southeast Missouri. He had four catches for 51 yards and touchdown, while adding 134 yards on three kickoff returns and 117 yards on a pair of punt returns. He got off to a fast start as he returned his first kickoff 83 yards to set up the Racers first touchdown. He later set an FCS record by returning a punt 100 yards for a touchdown.
Following the 2012 season, Powell was named a First-Team All-America by TSN and the Associated Press. He was also selected to the College Sporting News Fabulous 50 as an all-purpose back.
