After mother nature delayed the start of practice for over five hours, the Murray State football team took to the field for their first scrimmage of the season Saturday afternoon at Stewart Stadium.
The team took the field amidst sunny skies and went through individual work for about 30 minutes. The team went through their normal drills before turning to special teams.
The scrimmage began with a 3rd-and-short period. The offense picked up a couple first downs, but the defense responded in a big way by getting interceptions on back-to-back plays from Darian Yahyavi and Darrell Smith. Brandon Wicks collected the third interception for the defense two series later.
On the first series of drives, Parks Frazier led the offense down the field. He connected with Jesse Blackburn to pick up a first down, but a pair of incompletions turned the ball over on downs in the redzone.
The offense got into the endzone on their next series as KD Humphries connected with Walter Powell on a 64-yard pass down the right sideline.
The defense stiffened from that point and did not allow the offense to reach the endzone on the next seven drives. Cedric Jones ended one of the drives with an interception on a 3rd-and-long. Â
The team will meet on Sunday afternoon and then return to the practice field Monday morning at 9 a.m.
