Thursday Practice Ends With Friendly Competition

When you talk to any football team, it is always the linemen that say they are the best athletes. That is no different at Murray State where head coach Chris Hatcher let the big guys show off their skills in a friendly competition of catching punts out of the Jugs machine. Â
"We felt like we were a little sluggish yesterday so we wanted to let these guys have a little fun," said Hatcher. "At the end of the day, we want these guys to remember that this is just a game."
The competition was simple. Offensive line coach Shawn Bostick and defensive line coach Davern Williams picked their best three guys. Whoever caught the most punts, wins.
The defensive line won the competition 2-0, imploring their secret weapon in former junior college tight end Felton Collins.
After the players finished, Hatcher announced that the coaches had a chance to catch a punt, with their catches being worth two points. After Bostick dropped his punt, Williams stepped up confidently, called for the fair catch, and caught the punt.
In the end, it was the defense that got to walk off the field with bragging rights on Thursday.
The team will close out the second week of camp with an 8 a.m. practice Friday morning. The Racers will hold their second scrimmage on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Stewart Stadium. All practices are open to the public.
