Murray State put an end to preseason camp Saturday morning with their second scrimmage of the Fall. Â
"We had a good camp," said head coach Chris Hatcher. "I am not sure if we are ready for the first game, but it will be here before we know it."
Quarterback Parks Frazier got the offense going on his first drive of the day. He connected with Jesse Blackburn on an 18-yard gain on his first throw, and then came back two plays later and connected with Paul Rice on a 65-yard touchdown.
The catch was jus the beginning of a big day for Rice who hauled in four passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns on the day.
Maikhail Miller got into the act on his next possession as he led the team on a nine-play scoring drive that culminated with a two-yard touchdown pass to Walter Powell. Miller got the offense going with a 16-yard scramble, and was followed up with a 20-yard run from Jaamal Berry. Janawski Davis moved the chains with a 13-yard grab over the middle, and Jordan Morrow set up a first-and-goal with a 12-yard reception on the near sideline.
The defense stiffened after the first couple of series and held the offense out of the endzone on the next seven drives.
The offense did not reach the endzone again until they moved to the 1st-and-goal portion of the scrimmage. Freshman Demetric Johnson picked up nine yards on a running play up the middle. After a two-yard loss, Frazier found Rice for a two-yard touchdown.
The defense would get a stop on the next series, but freshman Zach Katzman followed up a four-yard run with a six-yard touchdown run up the middle.
Frazier would lead another scoring drive on his next series as he hit Kendarian Jennings for four yards, before connecting with Marcus Holliday on a screen pass for a six-yard score.
Frazier also found the endzone on his final series as he found Jordan Brown in the back of the endzone for a 10-yard touchdown.
The tight battle for the starting quarterback spot remained that way after the scrimmage as both players had strong days. Frazier led the way by going 9-of-13 for 116 yards and three touchdowns, while Miller was 10-of-14 for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Â
The Racers will return to the practice field at 8 a.m. Monday morning. The team will be off for the first day of classes on Tuesday before beginning preparation for the season opener at Missouri on Wednesday afternoon.
