The Murray State soccer team started the 2013 season with a second straight shutout and just missed scoring a second victory when they played Northern Kentucky to a 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon at NKU Soccer Stadium in Highland Heights, Ky.
The Racers (1-0-1) were the aggressors most of the day in peppering NKU (0-1-1) with 24 shot attempts, 13 of which were on goal. MSU held NKU to 16 attempts and Racers' goalkeeper Savanah Haberman saved six shots.
Julie Mooney led the Racers' attack with six shots on goal, while Rebecca Bjorkvall had three with Alex Hosey adding two and Bronagh one.
The start of the season has been a blitz for the Racers having played four games in eight days (two exhibitions) with three games coming away from home.
"Our play today was very much a grind-it-out game," MSU Head Coach Beth Acreman said. "With this being the opening weekend with a game on Friday and today, you could tell fatigue was playing a role today. But we're excited that we got so many shots off, but we just couldn't get that goal for the win today."
Haberman, a freshman, played 90 minutes in goal for the Racers in Friday's 1-0 win at Evansville and then 110 minutes in the scoreless tie at NKU. She recorded 10 saves in the two games.
"Savanaah made some great saves and is playing extremely well for us," Acreman said. "We still have some things to clean up defensively, but when you come away with two shutouts this weekend, that's what our goal was to begin with, so we're very happy with that."
"The girls responded really well this weekend on the road," Acreman added. "I think this will help us later in the season. We went on the road and came away with two shutouts and that's very encouraging to have two clean sheets this weekend."
The Racers hit the road again Friday for a 3 p.m. game in Huntsville against Alabama A&M. MSU returns home Sunday (Sep. 1) when they host Arkansas-Little Rock at Cutchin Field in a match that starts at 1 p.m. The game will be carried live on the OVC Digital Network.Â
