The Murray State women's soccer team will look to stay unbeaten this weekend as it splits team between the road and Cutchin Field. On Friday, at 3 p.m., the Racers will travel to Alabama A&M, followed by a 1 p.m., Sunday showdown with UALR in the home opener.
The Racers got off to a fast start out of the gate of the 2013 season last weekend by picking up their first-ever win at Evansville and tying at Northern Kentucky. Shauna Wicker's header off a Pavlina Nepokojova corner kick in the 42' minute proved to be all the offense the Racers needed, as they opened the season with 1-0 win against the Purple Aces last Friday. On Sunday, the Racers went the full 110 minutes but still ended up with a 0-0 tie at Northern Kentucky.
Freshman Savannah Haberman received OVC Goalkeeper of the Week honors for her two clean sheets and 10 saves to start her collegiate career. The MSU defense also shone last weekend, limiting opponents to just 23 shots, compared to 32 by the Racers, with only 10 of the 23 going on goal compared to 17 of 32 for Murray State.
Friday will be the sixth meeting all-time between the Racers and the Bulldogs and the fifth consecutive, with MSU holding a decisive 5-0-1 advantage. While having never beaten Murray State, the only two close games in the series did come at Bulldog Soccer Complex, the site of this year's fixture.
The first was a tie in Huntsville in the first meeting there in 2008, and then in 2010, the Racers needed overtime to top AAMU, 1-0. While those two matches were close, the entire series has been more lopsided, with the Racers outscoring the Bulldogs, 27-1, over six matches.
The opening weekend of play was not a happy one for Alabama A&M, as they dropped all three matches, falling 7-0, 10-0, 10-0 to South Carolina State, Mercer and Lipscomb, respectively. While they did not score, the Bulldogs did get 16 shots off over the three-game stretch, with 10 of those going on goal. Marissa Oehler played all 270 minutes of the weekend for Alabama A&M in goal and during that time, recorded 28 saves.
Sunday will be the fifth meeting all-time between MSU and UALR and will be the first at Cutchin Field. The Trojans are 3-0-1 all-time against the Racers, with three of four meetings taking place at a neutral site, UT Martin. The last meeting took place in 2009 and was the first ever in Little Rock. In that game, the Trojans notched their second shutout of the series and came away with 2-0 victory.
The first weekend of play under new head coach Adrian Blewitt was a successful one for UALR, as it defeated Southern, 6-1, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 4-0, at home. The Trojans spread their 10 goals out pretty evenly amongst the team with only Kayla Turner and Paige Mason scoring multiple goals at two each.
The UALR defense allowed just two shots last weekend, with both going on goal and both coming against Southern. Starting goalkeeper Kylie Wilson notched the only save of the week for the Trojans as she spent just under 120 minutes between the posts.
