Racers Open Practice Tuesday Morning
8/6/2013 11:21:00 AM | Football
The Murray State football team took to the field for the first practice of the season Tuesday morning. The team was greeted by cool temperatures and overcast skies.
The up tempo style of head coach Chris Hatcher was on full display as the Racers were flying from drill to drill. The tempo allows the Racers to get their work done in a shorter amount of time on the field.
The Racers began the workout with individual periods before moving into special teams. The second half of practice included the offense and defense going head-to-head, and concluded with a short team period.
The biggest position going on at camp is which quarterback will replace Casey Brockman. The Racers enter the season with five players battling for the starting spot. Sophomore KD Humphries and junior Parks Frazier emerged from spring practice as the frontrunners. The duo was followed closely by CJ Bennett. Transfer Maikhail Miller and Mitch Stults enter the mix as practice begins.
The new-look Racer defense proved to be just as fast paced as the offense as they were flying to the ball in every drill. First-year defensive coordinator Dennis Therrell has brought in a new scheme and a new attitude for 2013.
The strength of the defense may lie with the linebackers. One of the biggest is additions is the return of Sam Small in the middle. Along with Small, returning linebackers include Blake Salter, Qua Huzzie, Anthony Hayes and Chris Dansby.
The Racers will return to the field tomorrow morning at 8 a.m., before putting on the shoulder pads for the first time Thursday morning. All practices are open to the public.
