Murray State's Delaney Howson became the Racers' first medalist at the fifth annual Drake Creek Invitational at Drake Creek Golf Club in Ledbetter, Ky., as MSU ran away with their third team title.
Â
The Racers also set the tournament scoring mark with scores of 297-295-295=887 as they easily outdistanced runner-up Western Kentucky at 915. MSU also won Drake Creek titles in 2009 and 2011.
Â
Howson, who set the tournament single round mark with a 67 in round two, finished with a 13-shot win with scores of 73-67-71=211. Her score of 211 set the event scoring mark surpassing the 215 that Morehead State's Marisa Kamelgarn posted in 2010. Howson led the field in making 15 birdies in the 54-hole event. She became MSU's first winner of the event after a pair of second-place finishes by Andrea Downer in 2009 and Morgan Cross in 2011.
Â
"This was an all-around great effort by our team," MSU Head Coach Velvet Milkman said. "Congratulations to Delaney, she played so good all the way through. We had solid performances up and down the line-up and that will help us build confidence as we go into the fall season."
Â
Howson led a group of three Racers on the All-Tournament team included a pair of freshmen. Sydney Trimble and Jackie Van Meter shared fourth place. Trimble had scores of 72-77-76=225, while Van Meter finished 76-77-72=225.
Â
Sophie Hillier placed sixth for MSU with rounds of 76-74-76=226, while Minta Yin was 20th with rounds of 78-78-80=236.
Â
MSU's Gina Nuzzo placed first among the 12 individuals in the event with scores of 75-78-78=231 and was 14th overall. Abbi Stamper was 18th with rounds of 78-81-75=234. Leah Judd placed 52nd with scores of 84-86-88=258.Â
Â
Belmont was third with a score of 922, with Austin Peay (946), Tennessee Tech (950) and Marshall (950) making up the top-5. The rest of the field was rounded out by Northern Kentucky (957), Dayton (967), SIUE (972) and Tennessee State (1022).
Â
The Drake Creek course played to a par of 72 and 6,178 yards.
Â
The Racers are back in action at the Cardinal Cup (Sep. 16-17) at the Cardinal Club Golf Course in Simpsonville, Ky.
