Softball Pounds Out 37 Hits in DH Sweep

The Murray State softball team scored 27 runs on 37 hits Saturday as it swept both games at Southern Illinois' Saluki Fall Round Robin I in Carbondale. The Racers took game one over Saint Louis, 12-0; followed by a 15-1 win over John A. Logan.
The Racers controlled the game against Saint Louis from the onset, recording five straight singles after a leadoff groundout to start the first. MSU scored four runs in the opening stanza and never let up from there.
Murray State tallied 16 totals hits in the game and went on to plate two more runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and two in the seventh. The Racer defense was also stellar on the day, as it committed no errors over seven full innings.
Alexa Becker and Mo Ramsey led MSU offensively in the game, as each went 3-for-5 with three runs. Becker added to her stat line by also driving in two runs and notching a double. In total, 10 players tallied hits in the game for Murray State, with Leslie Bridges, Casey Castile and Cayla Levins also recording multiple hits.
While the offense was impressive in game one, the pitching was exceptional as well. CheyAnne Gaskey picked up her second win of the fall as she threw three hitless innings to open the game.
Mason Robinson went the middle two innings, allowing just three hits, while Bridges tossed the last two and allowed only one. The Racers recorded five total strikeouts in the contest, with Gaskey and Bridges getting two and Robinson recording one.
In game two against John A. Logan, it was even more offense as Murray State tallied 21 hits. Eleven Racers tallied hits in the game, with five garnering multiple hits.
Shelbey Miller led the way by going 4-for-5, while Castile and Morgan Harrell had three hits each. Castile totaled a game-high five RBIs in the contest on a single, a double and a triple. She was followed in the RBI column by Maggie Glass, who picked up four RBIs on a grand slam to dead center.
J.J. Francis picked up the win in the game, allowing just one run on four hits with three strikeouts. Robinson started the game with two hitless innings, while Gaskey closed out the game in the seventh and allowed just one hit.
After a 4-0 start, the Racers will take a week off before concluding fall play. Murray State will wrap up its fall season at home with a pair of doubleheaders against Kentucky Wesleyan Oct.4 and Lake Land Oct. 6.
