Racers Participate In Walk To School Day

Several members of the Murray State football team took place in the International Walk To School Day on Friday morning. The Racers joined several members of the community to walk several hundred students from the U.S. Bank location on 12th Street, as well as Downtown Murray to Murray Middle School. The Racers on hand were St. Pierre Anilus, Felton Collins, Pery Cooper, Lamont Crittendon, Paul Rice and Greg Willard, as well as head coach Chris Hatcher and assistants Shawn Bostick and John Therrell.
Organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America, Walk to School Day in the United States began in 1997 as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities. In 2000, the event became international when the UK and Canada (both of which had already been promoting walking to school) and the U.S. joined together for the first International Walk to School Day.
Growing interest in participation all over the world led the International Walk to School Committee to shifts its promotion to International Walk to School Month for the entire month of October. Last year, 4,447 schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico participated in the event and that number is expected to be exceeded this year.
