Jackson & Porter Net Weekly OVC Honors

After helping guide the Murray State women's basketball team to a 2-1 week, Netanya Jackson and Taylor Porter were honored by the OVC on Tuesday by being named adidas® Newcomer and Co-Freshman of the Week, respectively. Porter shared her honor with UT Martin's Ashia Jones.
Jackson continued to come on strong late in the season last week by averaging 10.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. She nearly notched her first career double-double twice on the week with nine points and 10 boards against Southeast Missouri and nine rebounds and a career-high 13 points versus Morehead State. The Nashville native also had a tremendous week at the free throw line where she shot 76.2 percent, including going 6-for-7 against UT Martin and a perfect 5-for-5 against Morehead State.
Porter also played a significant role in MSU's 2-1 week by leading the Racers with 16.7 points per game and shooting a blazing 53.1 percent from the floor. The native of Louisa, Ky., scored a career high 25 points against Southeast Missouri and followed that performance with 14 against UT Martin and 11 against Morehead State. Against UT Martin, in addition to the 14 points, she also pulled down six boards, had five assists and four steals. She finished the week shooting 8-for-11 from the free throw line and an astounding 8-for-12 from 3-point range.
The honor was the second in as many weeks for Jackson and first of the season for Porter. Porter, along with Janssen Starks and Nikia Edom, is now the third different Racer to win the award this year.
On Saturday, Jackson, Porter and the rest of the Racers will travel to Cape Girardeau for their 2013-14 finale. Tip-off against Southeast Missouri at the Show Me Center is scheduled for 3 p.m., with the men's game immediately following.
