A rare double double-double from senior Jessica Winfrey wasn't enough to propel the Murray State women's basketball team to a win, as it fell in its season finale, 65-57, at Southeast Missouri on Saturday in Cape Girardeau.
The Racers started the game shooting the ball well, firing at a 37 percent clip in the first half. Murray State trailed by as many as eight in the opening stanza, but rebounded nicely and ended the stanza on an 8-2 run to lead at the break, 34-30.
In the second, Murray State went cold and shot just 22.2 percent in the frame. Southeast Missouri ended the game on a 16-6 run, while Murray State did not make a field goal in the final 11 minutes of the contest. The Racers did shoot a season-high 88 percent from the free throw line Saturday, making 22 of 25, but it was not enough as they fell by eight.
Winfrey scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Racers and tied her career high in rebounds with 20. Netanya Jackson followed Winfrey with 17 points off the bench, while Taylor Porter added 11.
The double-double gives Winfrey 21 for her career, tying her for fourth place all-time in program history. The senior finished her final season with 302 points and 302 rebounds to give her 753 career points and 821 career rebounds. Her 2013-14 rebound total is sixth best in program history and her career total is also the sixth best.
Olivia Hackmann led SEMO (10-19, 6-10) with 16 points, while Patricia Mack posted her own double-double of 11 points and 16 rebounds. Connor King almost posted a double-double of her own pulling down 12 boards and scoring nine points.
The Racers finish their 2013-14 campaign with an overall record of 11-17 and 4-12 mark in the OVC. They will lose just one player from this year's squad, Winfrey, and look too return four of five starters next season.
