Racer Recruits Shine in Senior Seasons

The two members of the Murray State women's basketball team recruiting class of 2014 both closed out their respective high school careers in stellar fashion as they ready to report to MSU this fall.
Olivia Cunningham helped lead Horn Lake to the Mississippi Class 6A state title and a 29-1 overall record. The guard had an outstanding final four performance as she scored 26 points in the semi-finals and 19 in the championship game to be named Player of the Game.
Cunningham finished the year leading the Lady Eagles in scoring and earned All-District honors. She also finished the season ranked top 10 in the state in scoring and was ranked as one of the top 20 seniors in the state of Mississippi by Fila and in the top 15 by hssportsms.com.
For Alexis Cassell, the season, while equally as impressive, did not end as she wanted, with Holly Innocents falling in the Georgia Class A Private title game. Despite falling in the championship, the Bears went 29-1 on the year and Cassell averaged 10.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
Cassell began the season by being named to the Atlanta Tip-Off Club's Preseason All-Metro team and ended it with her being named as the Region Player of the Year. She was also named as the February Player of the month by XL212 and was named to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association and Fulton County Chamber of Commerce All-Star teams.
Both Cunningham and Cassell will join a Racer squad that loses just one senior to graduation. In addition to the two freshmen, MSU will also have the services of Ke'Shunan James and LeAsia Wright, who sat out the 2013-14 campaign.
