The 2014 Murray State football team has no shortage of running backs in its stable. What the team is lacking is a running back with collegiate game experience.
Last season, the duo of Jaamal Berry and Duane Brady combined for 1,139 yards and 11 touchdowns on 215 carries. The seniors accounted for 50.7% of the rushing attempts on the season.
With the duo now gone, the Racers have an open competition this spring for the starting spot in the Fall. The trio of backs battling it out have a combined 62 carries.
Junior Pokey Harris will make the move back to running back after spending last season at wide receiver. He 15 catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns, while also carrying the ball four times for minus-10 yards. As a true freshman, Harris backed up Berry and Brady and rushed for 74 yards on 18 carries.
Sophomore Marcus Holliday ranked fourth on the team in rushing last season as he ran for 219 yards and three touchdowns on 40 carries. His best game came against Campbellsville when he rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns against Campbellsville. He added 55 yards and a score in a victory over Austin Peay.
Redshirt freshman Demetric Johnson will be the third back battling for the starting position. Johnson joined the Racers after rushing for 1,974 yards and 32 touchdowns as a senior at South Pittsburg High School.
The depth in the backfield will get deeper in the fall with the addition of signees Garian Bradley and Jordan Troutman.
