2014 OVC Postseason Honors
Freshman Taylor Porter was honored for her stellar first season with the Murray State women's basketball team on Tuesday by being named to the OVC All-Newcomer team. She is the 22nd Racer in program history to be named to either the All-Freshman (prior to the 2003-04 season) or the All-Newcomer team and her selection marks the fourth straight year in which a MSU player has been chosen for the honor.
"As a coaching staff, we could not be more proud of Taylor," said head coach Rob Cross. "She is a tremendous young lady who has worked hard this season. She was already talented when she arrived here this summer, but her work ethic and diligence have helped take her game to the next level."
The Louisa, Ky., native ended her freshman campaign averaging 10.9 points per game, 2.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 0.7 steals. For the year, she shot 35.9 percent from the floor, 38.0 percent from 3-point range and 72.5 percent at the free throw line. She finished the season first on the team in 3-point percentage, first in total point scored (306), second in points per game, second in field goals and 3-point field goals made per game (3.6 and 1.4) and second in assists.
Porter began her Murray State career by scoring 11 points against Robert Morris-Springfield and would go on to record double-digit points in 18 more contests. She posted a career night on Feb. 19 against Southeast Missouri when she went 10-for-16 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond-the-arc to finish with a season best 25 points. She was also a stable force for the Racers at the line on the year with nights where she went 4-for-4, 6-for-6 and 7-for-7.
Next season, Porter will help lead a team that lost just one player to graduation and is losing just 14.8 percent of its offensive production. The 2013-14 Racers finished the year at 11-17 overall and 4-12 in the OVC.
