A seven-run third inning proved to be the Murray State softball team's undoing on Tuesday, as it fell 9-1 in five innings to Southern Illinois at Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale.
The Racers (16-17) held the Salukis scoreless in the first two innings, but MSU starter CheyAnne Gaskey got into trouble in the third when she allowed three straight base runners on two walks and an error. Shaye Hare put the Salukis (16-15) on the board in the next at bat when she drew a bases loaded walk before Taylor Orsburn busted the game wide open with a grand slam. Kaylyn Harker wrapped up the outburst later in the frame with a two-run triple to push the score to 7-0.
Alex Becker broke up SIU's Katie Bertelsen's no-hit bid in the fourth with her fourth double of the year. Despite the hit, the Racers were unable to score in the inning and still trailed 7-0. In the fifth, however, MSU took advantage of two errors by the Salukis and a hit by Morgan Harrell and were finally able to push a run across. Maggie Glass, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored MSU's lone run on the day when Shelbey Miller reached on an error with the bases loaded.
After getting out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fifth, the Salukis resumed their hot offense in the bottom of the frame with back-to-back doubles from Kelsey Gonazalez and Harker to give their team a 8-1 lead. Two batters later, Jayna Spivey brought the game to a halt when she singled to score Gonzalez and end the game via the eight-run rule.
Along with Becker and Harrell, Cayla Levins was the only other Racer to come up with a hit in the contest. Harker led SIU in the game by going 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs, while Michelle Glenn was 2-for-3 with a run.
Gaskey fell to 7-9 on the year with the loss, after allowing four earned runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout over 2.1 innings. Bertelsen got the win for the Salukis to move to 8-5 on the season by giving up no earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks in a complete game effort.
Murray State will return to the friendly confines of Racer Field this weekend when it hosts a pair of OVC doubleheaders. On Saturday, MSU will welcome Tennessee Tech, followed by Jacksonville State on Sunday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
