Spring Finished - Racers Look To Regular Season

The Murray State football squad finished spring workouts Thursday with a 90-minute session and now the regular season is closer than ever.
According to Head Coach Chris Hatcher, the Racers accomplished much in their 15 allotted workouts, including battling adverse weather conditions at times. MSU had their final scrimmage last weekend and today ran a limited set of snaps to get a final look at some players.
"I thought CJ Bennett and KD Humphries (MSU quarterbacks) both had a great command of what we were trying to accomplish offensively," Hatcher said. "On the defensive side I think the biggest question for Coach Therrell (defensive coordinator) was to find the identity of our defense."
As for the complete body of work for the spring, Hatcher was pleased with the progress made, especially in the areas of tempo and understanding of schemes.
"I think for the younger players understand the tempo we want to practice at," Hatcher added. "Now we didn't always practice correctly, but they learned the process of how we operate. I think that familiarity heading into the fall will be crucial for us. We have a long ways to go, but I think we made proper strides in these 15 practices."
The Racers will wrap up the school year with their Kentucky Derby, which is a fun way to compete in the areas of strength and conditioning. Captains draft their teams and the competition is one of the highlights of the year for the Racers.
Fall camp for the Racers will begin in early August.
The 2014 Racer Football schedule will be released soon.
