The Murray State softball team suffered a tough 1-0 loss at Morehead State in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at University Field. However, the Racers bounced back in game two to earn a split with a 5-1 win.
Game 1 – Morehead St. 1 (12-29-1, 6-12), Murray St. 0 (24-21, 11-8)
Game one was a pitcher's duel between Murray State's Mason Robinson and Morehead State's Tanna Seuferer. Murray State was only able to get five hits, just one for extra bases, and a walk off Seuferer over the full seven innings. Meanwhile, Robinson allowed the Eagles just one hit in the first 6.1 innings of the game, all while tying her career-high in strikeouts with eight.
However, it was the final 0.2 innings that proved to be problematic for Murray State. With one out, Sam Howard singled up the middle give the Eagles a chance at the win. In the next at bat, Howard moved to second on a sac bunt from Jamie Massaro, giving Morehead State just its third runner in scoring position of the game.
Karly Thompson ended the game in heartbreaking fashion for the Racers in the next at bat when she hit a hard ground ball that went perfectly through Robinson's legs. The ball got into the outfield giving Howard enough time to cross the plate and Morehead the 1-0 walk-off win.
Mo Ramsey was the only player for either team to gather multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3. Leslie Bridges, Jessica Twaddle and Cayla Levins also got hits in the game for the Racers; while Kayla McGuffey was the only other Eagle to register a hit on Robinson.
Game 2 –Murray St. 5 (25-21, 12-8), Morehead St. 1 (11-30-1, 6-13)
Game two went very differently for the Racers, as they controlled the contest from the onset. Murray State began the scoring in the finale with a triple from Taylor Odom that made it 2-0 in the early going. Mo Ramsey and Jessica Twaddle scored on the play, after they each reached on a single earlier in the inning.
Three innings went by, before the Racers scored again on an attempted sac bunt that went down as a single by Cayla Levins. Twaddle scored on the play for Murray State, after she led off the fourth with a double, her second hit of the game.
In the fifth, Murray State moved the score to 5-0 on two miscues by the Eagles. Alexa Becker led off the inning with a single and later scored on a wild pitch by Morehead State's Megan Tymorek. Two batters later, Ramsey scored from the third after catcher Jamie Massaro attempted to throw the ball back to Kelsey McMurray in the circle, but the ball sailed over McMurray's head and allowed Ramsey to score.
Morehead State broke up CheyAnne Gaskey's shutout bid in the sixth when Sam Howard scored on a bases loaded sac fly from Jordan Boone. The inning could have been much worse for the Racers as the Eagles loaded the bases with no outs, but were held to just one. Neither team scored in the seventh, giving Murray State the 5-1 win and putting to an end to a brief three-game losing skid.
Mo Ramsey went 3-for-4 with two runs in the game, to finish the day at a very impressive 5-for-7. Twaddle also had a good game for Murray State, as she went 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk.
Gaskey gave up just one run in the complete game, as she allowed just five hits and struck out three to move to 10-11 on the year. Tymorek took the loss for Morehead State to fall to 5-13 on the year by allowing four earned runs on nine hits with two walks and only one strikeout.
The Racers will return to Racer Field for the final time next weekend for a three-game set with OVC-leading SIU Edwardsville. Saturday's doubleheader with the Cougars is slated to begin at 1 p.m., as is Sunday's single game.
