The 1979 Murray State University football team will hold its 35-year reunion at Homecoming, October 10 – 12, 2014. Along with other activities, the team will be recognized at the Homecoming football game against Southeast Missouri State which kicks off on Saturday, October 11 (3 p.m.) at Stewart Stadium.
                Â
The 1979 team, coached by Mike Gottfried, went undefeated in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 6-0 record. Ironically, this year's Homecoming game is against SEMO which was a non-conference opponent for the Racers that year in the opening game of the season. The Racers and Redhawks played to a 21-21 tie that season. MSU won non-conference games at Evansville, UT Martin and Indianapolis with a loss at Southeastern Louisianna. The team recorded conference wins over Tennessee Tech, Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky, Austin Peay and on the road at Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky.
Â
The team lost to Lehigh, 28-9, in the NCAA I-AA Semifinals in Murray.
Â
A full schedule of activities is being prepared, starting with a visit to the current team's Friday afternoon practice, a tour of the renovated and new football facilities, a Friday evening reception, a special Reunion Brunch and a tailgate before the Racers Homecoming game. Additional information, including a reservation form, will be sent to all team members.
