Murray State women's basketball head coach Rob Cross has announced the signings Jasmine Bonds and Ajee Smith for the 2014-15 season. Bonds is a 5-8 guard from O'Fallon High School in O'Fallon, Illinois, while Smith is a 5-3 guard who is transferring from Southwestern Tennessee Community College in Memphis.
"Jasmine and Ajee are both quality people and great students who will fit in well with the Murray State community. Their work ethic and character are going to afford them the possibility of being successful student-athletes at MSU. I am proud of the efforts of Coach Mitchell, Coach Buggs and Coach Tony Cross in helping us bring two quality young women in as members of the Racer Family."
Bonds was a two-time All-Southwestern Conference selection for the Panthers, where she averaged 17.0 points per game during her senior season, after averaging 15.3 the previous year. She was also a 2013-14 Belleville News-Democrat Class 3A-4A Girls All-Area honoree, in addition to qualifying for the state track meet in long jump and winning a sectional title in the 4x200 relay.
"Jasmine is an extremely athletic guard that is capable of contributing at all three guard positions. She is a solid three point shooter that can flat out get to the rim and is a perfect fit for our style of play. Her athletic ability will give her the chance to become an elite defender. One thing that excites me about her is that she has a father that played football at the highest level so she comes in already understanding the commitment it takes to succeed in Division I athletics."
Smith, a Los Angeles native who prepped at Knightdale High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, played her freshman season at Miami Dade College before transferring to STCC last year. She was an All-Conference selection in high school and averaged 3.9 points per game as a freshman for Miami Dade. After transferring to Southwest Tennessee for her sophomore season, Smith was the team's second leading scorer with 12.0 points per game to go along with 3.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
"Ajee is an extremely quick true point guard that has the potential of giving us quality depth at the point along with our returning student-athletes that play the position. She has a very good understanding of the game and was a floor general in high school and junior college. She can provide defensive energy for her team as well because of her ability to extend and guard the ball ninety-four feet."
The duo brings Cross' 2014-15 class up to five with freshmen Olivia Cunningham and Lexii Cassell and junior college transfer Kyra Gulledge signing earlier this year.
