Murray State head football coach Chris Hatcher, players Travis Taylor and CJ Bennett and local youth baseball coach Tim Thurmond took the Ice Bucket Challenge on Saturday morning to help raise awareness for ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.
The challenge has been popular on the internet throughout the summer with various coaches, sports figures, celebrities and people from all walks of life taking the challenge to raise awareness of a crippling disease that affects two in every 100,000 people.
Thurmond began the challenge by explaining about the disease that sees around 5,600 new Americans diagnosed every year. He also explained that today's challenge was in honor of Brad Barnett and his family, local residents who are battling with ALS.Â
He also reminded Murray residents of the upcoming ALS Walk at the CFSB Center on Sept. 20. The aim of the event is to raise money for research to fight and find a cure for ALS.
In addition, the two coaches issued challenges to others to take the plunge. Thurmond challenged Tab Brockman, Murray-Calloway County Parks Director, while Hatcher challenged Murray State head men's basketball coach Steve Prohm and his Racer basketball team.
Once the introductions were made, Hatcher, Thurmond, Taylor and Bennett took the challenge, being doused in icy cold water by members of the Racer football team and Thurmond's team, the Murray Youth Bronco League Age 11-12 All-Star Team.
The event brought an end to preseason camp, as MSU's focus now moves toward game preparation. The Racers will open their 2014 campaign at home at Stewart Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m.
