The Murray State women's soccer team will open the 2014 season on Friday at Cutchin Field against Arkansas State. The match will also serve as the beginning of a new era for MSU soccer, as it will be the first official game for first-year head coach Jeremy Groves.
The Racers are 5-8-1 all-time in season openers and 8-6 in home openers. On six previous occasions the Racers have opened their season at home and they are 2-3-1 in those contests.
Last season, MSU put an end to a nine-year winless streak on opening day when it topped Evansville, 1-0, in Evansvile. Murray State also won its home opener last season, a 1-0 victory of UALR, marking the third time in five year that they had accomplished that feat.
The Racers played their lone exhibition Sunday and fell 7-1 at Western Kentucky. The Lady Toppers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but Julie Mooney cut the deficit in half in the 24th minute on a shot form 12-yards out. However, that would be as close as MSU would get, as it went on to drop a 7-1 decision.
Â
Friday will be the 10th meeting between the two teams with Arkansas State holding a 5-4 advantage over the Racers. ASU has won the last two meetings, but all five of its victories have come by just one goal each.
At Cutchin Field, Murray State has the advantage, with wins in two of the previous three meetings in Murray. In 2012, the two teams met in Murray for both teams season opener with Arkansas State coming out a 1-0 winner.
Â
The Red Wolves, who were picked sixth in the Sun Belt preseason poll, come into Friday with 0-1-1 record in the preseason. ASU began its exhibition contests with a 1-1 tie against Saint Louis and ended with a 4-0 loss to Memphis.
Â
Katie Hosea scored the lone preseason goal for Arkansas State, a strike in the 70th minute against Saint Louis. Junior Loren Mitchell will return to the team this season after leading the team with 12 goals in 2013, while senior Samhia Simao also returns after she scored six goals last year.
