The Murray State women's soccer team will look to bounce back from a seasoning opening loss last Friday with a rare home-away weekend. On Friday, the Racers will host Georgia State, followed by a trip to Dayton on Sunday.
Despite two late goals from Julie Mooney, a late rally by the Racers fell short in MSU's season opener Friday with a 3-2 loss to Arkansas State. The Red Wolves capitalized on two penalty kicks and a defensive miscue by Murray State to take 3-0 lead in the match with just over 30 minutes to play. Then, in the 68th minute, Mooney gave the Racers new life with a goal set up by Lyssie Wright.
With just 1:55 to play, MSU pulled within one on a second goal by Mooney this time assisted by Bronagh Kerins. It was not enough, however, as Murray State fell 3-2, despite outshooting Arkansas State, 22-10, and placing 10 shots on target, three more than ASU.
Â
Friday will be the first meeting between the two teams; however MSU is no stranger to the Sun Belt Conference. The Racers are currently 11-11-1 all-time against teams currently in the Sun Belt after Friday's loss to Arkansas State.
Â
Georgia State opened its 2014 campaign with two overtime matches, a loss at Furman and tie at Kennesaw State. In the opener against Furman, the two teams went scoreless for the full 90 minutes until the Paladins finally broke through in the 99th minute to seal the win.
At Kennesaw State, Ashley Nagy scored for the Panthers in the 39th minute to give her team a 1-0 lead. However, the Owls equalized in the 71st minute and from that point neither team scored, resulting in the draw.
GSU used two different goalkeepers last weekend with Brie Haynes allowing one goal and making six saves in 98 minutes against Furman, while Christa Fox gave up one goal and made five saves in 110 minutes at Kennesaw State.
Â
Sunday will be the first meeting between Murray State and the Flyers; however, it will not be the Racers' first trip to the Dayton Campus. Baujan Field is the site of MSU's first and only NCAA appearance a 2-0 loss to Virginia Tech in 2009.
